Why OBS Studio is not recording the game audio ? (For Linux and Windows)

Tutorial OBS for fixing the "No game audio" Issue - The Mixer panel should have "Desktop audio" and the bar is moving

In this article I will show you quickly how to capture your game audio in good quality if for any reason you have no audio from your game while streaming or recording with OBS Studio.
If you have desktop audio with a poor, bad and low audio quality then this article will help you to fix the game audio for streaming.

This is the Linux Ubuntu tutorial, for windows 7 or windows 10, click here.

Part 1. Fix low quality game audio

Your Operating System is sending the desktop audio to your headset and OBS Studio will capture the audio of your desktop and game through the headset as a default setting.
This is not optimal and we need to change that.

You need a loopback interface which will record the high quality sound from your computer then send it back to your headset.
As a result, instead of recording the poor audio from your headset controller in OBS Studio, you will record high quality audio and fix the poor audio quality OBS is recording from your game.

On linux Ubuntu you want to install pulseAudio and its controller then create a loopback interface.

sudo apt install pulseaudio pavucontrol
sudo pactl load-module module-loopback

Set the default output of your system’s sound settings to “Built-in Audio”.

Then open Pulse Audio Volume Control app which you just installed before. Now in the “playback” tab, select your headset as output.

Now in the “Recording” tab, select the “Built-in Audio” which you just set as default output in your system’s settings.

Now try to play a random ( totally random ) video on youtube to see if:

  • 1. The Loopback on Monitor of Built-In Audio audio bar is moving
  • 2. The audio bar in the recording tab is moving
  • 3. You have audio in your headset

Is it a success ? If yes then congratulations ! If not go on my youtube video right up, leave a thumb down an explain your issue in the comments. I read everything and try to answer asap.

Now we want to make this configuration permanent. If like me you have a USB sound card, a usb Headset then you need additional actions to make this permanent.

# Now open the pulse audio config file
sudo nano /etc/pulse/default.pa

# Comment the following line to avoid your headset or usb audio card to be set as default
# load-module module-switch-on-connect

# append the following line
load-module module-loopback

Set a “fallback” the Built-In Audio output

Part 2. Record game audio in OBS Studio

If you don’t have any game or desktop audio in OBS Studio it is probably because your “Mixer” panel is empty as below.

Now we correctly setup our desktop audio output, we can setup OBS to record it. It’s very easy.

Go to Files -> Settings > Audio tab and set the “Desktop” audio parameter to “Built-in Digital Audio” . The exact name can be different, refers to your system’s default audio output we setup in the first part of this tutorial.

Now everything should work smoothly, try to record a clip to see if the game audio is correctly recorded. You should have audio from your game and the audio bar in OBS Mixer should be moving.
